Narrative:

Received turnover from previous shift reference a maintenance carryover item regarding a fuel imbal condition with an associated fuel confign light in cockpit. At this point; the left center fuel boost pump was removed and a replacement pump was prepared for installation. The pump that I installed was not the correct effectivity for the subject aircraft because it had not been modified. No explanation for why this pump was ordered/delivered to the aircraft since previous shift personnel said they used the manufacturer's part number off the removed unit when they ordered the replacement from the supplier. To prevent future occurrences; I suggest that every amt make a conscious effort to ensure correct effectivity of replacement parts regardless of manpower or time constraints; WX; turnover; or any other diversion from the job at hand. Also think that a review of our part procurement process be reviewed internally.
