Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff; the #1 flight attendant called. She told me that she had thick; black smoke coming out of one oven. She had already turned the oven off. I could smell smoke. We called the cockpit and described the situation. Captain made the decision to return to ZZZ immediately and made a PA to that effect. We got the halon from emergency equipment in first class and kept it handy at #1 jumpseat. Flight landed without incident and was met by fire department and maintenance personnel. There were no flames and maintenance determined cause to be excess grease and dirt on exposed wires/elements in back of oven. This was an old air carrier Y aircraft and has different ovens from the air carrier X aircraft.
