Narrative:

Departing abq on runway 8; clearance was to follow noise abatement procedure and turn to 310 degree heading. Noise abatement procedure is to turn at 13.5 DME from abq VOR. Copilot programmed a 13.5 DME ring around abq airport vice 13.5 DME from abq VOR. On climb out; terrain appeared to get close and we were still a few mi from the 13.5 DME ring displayed on FMS navigation display. As I checked our distance; from abq VOR; I noticed the 13.5 DME ring on the navigation display within the terrain area. Before I got a chance to tell copilot to start turn; departure control told us to start our turn to 310 degrees and asked if we had terrain in sight. We did have terrain in sight both visually and on the navigation display. (This aircraft has the ability to display terrain on navigation display.) we were able to see and avoid the terrain. Altitude was 10500 ft MSL when we started the turn and we were approximately on abq VOR 080 degree radial and 19 DME. Egpws never alerted to any terrain conflict.
