Narrative:

Taxiing for departure on taxiway C to runway 35L; the #2 reverser light illuminated. To troubleshoot and contact dispatch we taxied onto the holding area short of runway 35L departure end. After entering the holding area; ground advised us that the city no longer maintained that area and that they could not direct us to use it. We had to return to the gate for further maintenance and then discovered that several taxi (blue) lights in our path were elevated above the concrete on poles (approximately 6 inches high). To avoid them we reversed our course and departed the holding area along our entry pathway. The 10-7 pages does not prohibit the use of this area of the taxiway and should be marked to include this restriction.
