Narrative:

Landed runway 7R at lvk in hazy conditions just before sunset. Sun angle and haze made up-sun visibility very poor. Normal landing direction at lvk is runway 25. Private rated student (in left seat) taxied back to runway 7R, or at least intended to. He taxied past a right turn sign on the left side of the taxiway pointing to runway 7R, and followed the taxiway through a later right turn to a runway. He called tower saying 'ready on runway 7R.' tower cleared us for takeoff on runway 7R. I (CFI in right seat) looked up the final as we taxied onto the runway and saw an aircraft on short final, which went around. We had taxied onto runway 7L! Factors: 1) WX conditions: hazy and low sun angle made visibility poor up-sun. Taxi to runway 7R/left threshold put taxiway signs on left side of aircraft and up-sun. 2) aircraft confign: C177RG sits low with high instrument panel. CFI in right seat has poor view out left side for ground sign visibility. 3) first flight with this private rated student transitioning to complex aircraft. Student seemed competent but (as I subsequently learned) has tendency to rush things and miss details (like taxiway signs). I was observing taxi technique/post landing procedures while he taxied past the runway 7R sign (as I was telling him to perform post landing checks at a full stop). 4) unfamiliar runway operations at familiar airport. I've made thousands of lndgs at lvk on runway 25L/right and runway 7L, few on runway 7R. I didn't remember the turnoff to runway 7R and extension that leads to runway 7L. 5) controller couldn't see our aircraft position as he was looking into the haze/sun, too. Corrective actions: 1) runway signs on both side of taxiway would have made it easier for me to detect taxi error by student. 2) make student come to complete stop before taxiing to active after clearing runway.

Title: C177 CONDUCTING TRAINING AT LVK TAXIED FOR DEP TO AND ENTERED THE WRONG RWY RESULTING IN A GAR WITH VISIBILITY FACTORS CONTRIBUTING.

Narrative: LANDED RWY 7R AT LVK IN HAZY CONDITIONS JUST BEFORE SUNSET. SUN ANGLE AND HAZE MADE UP-SUN VISIBILITY VERY POOR. NORMAL LNDG DIRECTION AT LVK IS RWY 25. PVT RATED STUDENT (IN L SEAT) TAXIED BACK TO RWY 7R, OR AT LEAST INTENDED TO. HE TAXIED PAST A R TURN SIGN ON THE L SIDE OF THE TXWY POINTING TO RWY 7R, AND FOLLOWED THE TXWY THROUGH A LATER R TURN TO A RWY. HE CALLED TWR SAYING 'READY ON RWY 7R.' TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF ON RWY 7R. I (CFI IN R SEAT) LOOKED UP THE FINAL AS WE TAXIED ONTO THE RWY AND SAW AN ACFT ON SHORT FINAL, WHICH WENT AROUND. WE HAD TAXIED ONTO RWY 7L! FACTORS: 1) WX CONDITIONS: HAZY AND LOW SUN ANGLE MADE VISIBILITY POOR UP-SUN. TAXI TO RWY 7R/L THRESHOLD PUT TXWY SIGNS ON L SIDE OF ACFT AND UP-SUN. 2) ACFT CONFIGN: C177RG SITS LOW WITH HIGH INST PANEL. CFI IN R SEAT HAS POOR VIEW OUT L SIDE FOR GND SIGN VISIBILITY. 3) FIRST FLT WITH THIS PVT RATED STUDENT TRANSITIONING TO COMPLEX ACFT. STUDENT SEEMED COMPETENT BUT (AS I SUBSEQUENTLY LEARNED) HAS TENDENCY TO RUSH THINGS AND MISS DETAILS (LIKE TXWY SIGNS). I WAS OBSERVING TAXI TECHNIQUE/POST LNDG PROCS WHILE HE TAXIED PAST THE RWY 7R SIGN (AS I WAS TELLING HIM TO PERFORM POST LNDG CHKS AT A FULL STOP). 4) UNFAMILIAR RWY OPS AT FAMILIAR ARPT. I'VE MADE THOUSANDS OF LNDGS AT LVK ON RWY 25L/R AND RWY 7L, FEW ON RWY 7R. I DIDN'T REMEMBER THE TURNOFF TO RWY 7R AND EXTENSION THAT LEADS TO RWY 7L. 5) CTLR COULDN'T SEE OUR ACFT POS AS HE WAS LOOKING INTO THE HAZE/SUN, TOO. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: 1) RWY SIGNS ON BOTH SIDE OF TXWY WOULD HAVE MADE IT EASIER FOR ME TO DETECT TAXI ERROR BY STUDENT. 2) MAKE STUDENT COME TO COMPLETE STOP BEFORE TAXIING TO ACTIVE AFTER CLRING RWY.
