Narrative:

After calling hnl ramp on taxiway a, we were informed that we would have a 2-3 min wait for our gate. When on taxiway G inbound, we called ground to inform them that we would need to hold for our gate. Ground instructed us to hold our position and instructed a B717 which had just cleared runway 8L to taxi inbound on taxiway left. While we were holding, a tug with several cans in tow was holding at the vehicle hold point waiting to cross from our right to left in front of us. We were well short of the hold line for the vehicle 'road' and we had more than 2 mins let to wait for our gate, so I waved the tug to cross after conferring with the captain. The tug driver then crossed from right to left. The tug driver continued to cross taxiway left while looking only to his right (trying to spot traffic outbound on taxiway left). At the same time, the B717 inbound on taxiway left did not slow for the tug. The right wingtip of the B717 struck the tug and the first can knocking the driver from the tug. We then contacted both hnl ramp and hnl ground to request crash fire rescue equipment. Crash fire rescue equipment responded in about 1-2 mins. Before the crash fire rescue equipment responded, some air carrier X personnel assisted the tug driver. Chain of events: B717 was taxiing in on a typically outbound taxiway which the tug driver did not expect.

Title: B717 INBOUND TO GATE AT HNL STRIKES AND INJURES DRIVER OF TUG XING TXWY G AND TXWY L AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE INTER-ISLAND TERMINAL.

Narrative: AFTER CALLING HNL RAMP ON TXWY A, WE WERE INFORMED THAT WE WOULD HAVE A 2-3 MIN WAIT FOR OUR GATE. WHEN ON TXWY G INBOUND, WE CALLED GND TO INFORM THEM THAT WE WOULD NEED TO HOLD FOR OUR GATE. GND INSTRUCTED US TO HOLD OUR POS AND INSTRUCTED A B717 WHICH HAD JUST CLRED RWY 8L TO TAXI INBOUND ON TXWY L. WHILE WE WERE HOLDING, A TUG WITH SEVERAL CANS IN TOW WAS HOLDING AT THE VEHICLE HOLD POINT WAITING TO CROSS FROM OUR R TO L IN FRONT OF US. WE WERE WELL SHORT OF THE HOLD LINE FOR THE VEHICLE 'ROAD' AND WE HAD MORE THAN 2 MINS LET TO WAIT FOR OUR GATE, SO I WAVED THE TUG TO CROSS AFTER CONFERRING WITH THE CAPT. THE TUG DRIVER THEN CROSSED FROM R TO L. THE TUG DRIVER CONTINUED TO CROSS TXWY L WHILE LOOKING ONLY TO HIS R (TRYING TO SPOT TFC OUTBOUND ON TXWY L). AT THE SAME TIME, THE B717 INBOUND ON TXWY L DID NOT SLOW FOR THE TUG. THE R WINGTIP OF THE B717 STRUCK THE TUG AND THE FIRST CAN KNOCKING THE DRIVER FROM THE TUG. WE THEN CONTACTED BOTH HNL RAMP AND HNL GND TO REQUEST CFR. CFR RESPONDED IN ABOUT 1-2 MINS. BEFORE THE CFR RESPONDED, SOME ACR X PERSONNEL ASSISTED THE TUG DRIVER. CHAIN OF EVENTS: B717 WAS TAXIING IN ON A TYPICALLY OUTBOUND TXWY WHICH THE TUG DRIVER DID NOT EXPECT.
