Declared emergency deviation (15-20 NM south of course) because ATC disapproved, said deviation for massive thunderstorm. Still on clearance permitting only 10 NM deviation south of course. Broadcast on 121.5, lights on, etc, as per regulation. ZZZ ATC, ZZZ2 radio, dispatch later apprised of the foregoing.
