Narrative:

I had experienced a gear unsafe indication and had used a nitrogen blow down bottle to make sure the gear was down and locked. My mechanic from a neighboring airport inspected the plane and said it was only a faulty bulb and that the gear was safely locked in the down position. My mechanic requested that I fly to his airport to recharge the nitrogen bottle and make repairs. I was told afterwards by a third party that this was illegal without a ferry permit from the FAA. I was unaware of such a requirement and it seemed there was no risk to do a 5 min flight to the repair shop. I am now aware and will not do this again without the proper ferry permit.

Narrative: I HAD EXPERIENCED A GEAR UNSAFE INDICATION AND HAD USED A NITROGEN BLOW DOWN BOTTLE TO MAKE SURE THE GEAR WAS DOWN AND LOCKED. MY MECH FROM A NEIGHBORING ARPT INSPECTED THE PLANE AND SAID IT WAS ONLY A FAULTY BULB AND THAT THE GEAR WAS SAFELY LOCKED IN THE DOWN POS. MY MECH REQUESTED THAT I FLY TO HIS ARPT TO RECHARGE THE NITROGEN BOTTLE AND MAKE REPAIRS. I WAS TOLD AFTERWARDS BY A THIRD PARTY THAT THIS WAS ILLEGAL WITHOUT A FERRY PERMIT FROM THE FAA. I WAS UNAWARE OF SUCH A REQUIREMENT AND IT SEEMED THERE WAS NO RISK TO DO A 5 MIN FLT TO THE REPAIR SHOP. I AM NOW AWARE AND WILL NOT DO THIS AGAIN WITHOUT THE PROPER FERRY PERMIT.
