Narrative:

After receiving takeoff clearance, my first officer advanced the power levers toward our takeoff setting. As the power levers went through about straight up, the #1 engine N1 tach needle stayed at about 27% as the digital readout went to about 55%, with the engine power advancing. I rejected the takeoff prior to 60 KTS. As I exited the runway, the tach went blank.
