Narrative:

Takeoff from incorrect runway at hobby, tx (hou). Cleared for takeoff on runway 12R aircraft departed on runway 17, aircraft initially on taxiway M, holding short of taxiway D. Aircraft was cleared 'position and hold on runway 12R.' while taxiing into position, tower cleared aircraft for takeoff. I was the right seat, PNF, and I had the airport diagram on my side pad. When the aircraft was aligned with the runway, I thought I was looking at the visual cues I had expected to see. However, I failed to xchk the heading indicator. We did not realize we had used the wrong runway until we were airborne and admonished by the tower. Besides the obvious cause of not checking the heading indicator before takeoff, another consideration, in my opinion, contributed. There was inadequate runway markings and signs to allow the pilot to positively identify runway 12R.

Title: FLT CREW OF UNIDENTED ACFT DEPARTING HOU TKOF ON RWY 17 AT INTXN D VICE RWY 12R AS CLRED.

Narrative: TKOF FROM INCORRECT RWY AT HOBBY, TX (HOU). CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 12R ACFT DEPARTED ON RWY 17, ACFT INITIALLY ON TXWY M, HOLDING SHORT OF TXWY D. ACFT WAS CLRED 'POS AND HOLD ON RWY 12R.' WHILE TAXIING INTO POS, TWR CLRED ACFT FOR TKOF. I WAS THE R SEAT, PNF, AND I HAD THE ARPT DIAGRAM ON MY SIDE PAD. WHEN THE ACFT WAS ALIGNED WITH THE RWY, I THOUGHT I WAS LOOKING AT THE VISUAL CUES I HAD EXPECTED TO SEE. HOWEVER, I FAILED TO XCHK THE HDG INDICATOR. WE DID NOT REALIZE WE HAD USED THE WRONG RWY UNTIL WE WERE AIRBORNE AND ADMONISHED BY THE TWR. BESIDES THE OBVIOUS CAUSE OF NOT CHKING THE HDG INDICATOR BEFORE TKOF, ANOTHER CONSIDERATION, IN MY OPINION, CONTRIBUTED. THERE WAS INADEQUATE RWY MARKINGS AND SIGNS TO ALLOW THE PLT TO POSITIVELY IDENT RWY 12R.
