Narrative:

All operations normal and standard until taking active runway. I moved the power levers to the flex detent and called, set flex. At that moment there was a loud bang from the left side of the aircraft. I immediately rejected the takeoff and cleared the runway at T8. With the aircraft stopped, I asked the first flight attendant to inspect the left side of the aircraft. Also, our attention was drawn to the left engine N2 parameter which was flashing a 7.4 indication. The first flight attendant reported no fire, no visible damage. After securing the left engine as a precautionary measure, the aircraft was returned to the gate.
