Narrative:

Had difficulty starting engine in this motor glider and elected to enter air traffic area without establishing communication while I sorted out the engine problem. Also had the wrong radio microphone selected which took another few seconds to correct. Once on downwind, and cleared for landing, I turned the motor off again, which is normal procedure. On short final, the tower rescinded the landing clearance and instructed me to go around. While restarting the engine below 100 ft AGL, I forgot to lock the spoilers, which ride halfway out if not locked. With the power on and (unknowingly) spoilers 1/2 deployed, the airspeed decayed. I asked for and was given a landing clearance (as the plane ahead cleared the runway). I staggered onto the runway in a full stall, then realized the spoilers were unlocked. The tower reprimanded me for entering the pattern without establishing 2-WAY communication. This series of errors, miscoms and high workload events led to a very dangerous situation -- too low and too slow. Had I been less lucky this could have been a crash.

Title: A MOTOR GLIDER PLT ENTERS BJC CLASS D AIRSPACE WITHOUT COM WHILE DEALING WITH AN ENG STARTING PROB. AFTER START, ESTABLISHING COM AND SHUTTING DOWN AGAIN PER PROC HE WAS UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH A GAR ON SHORT FINAL BECAUSE OF IMPROPERLY EXTENDED SPOILERS EVEN THOUGH THE ENG WAS RESTARTED BELOW 100 FT.

Narrative: HAD DIFFICULTY STARTING ENG IN THIS MOTOR GLIDER AND ELECTED TO ENTER ATA WITHOUT ESTABLISHING COM WHILE I SORTED OUT THE ENG PROB. ALSO HAD THE WRONG RADIO MIKE SELECTED WHICH TOOK ANOTHER FEW SECONDS TO CORRECT. ONCE ON DOWNWIND, AND CLRED FOR LNDG, I TURNED THE MOTOR OFF AGAIN, WHICH IS NORMAL PROC. ON SHORT FINAL, THE TWR RESCINDED THE LNDG CLRNC AND INSTRUCTED ME TO GO AROUND. WHILE RESTARTING THE ENG BELOW 100 FT AGL, I FORGOT TO LOCK THE SPOILERS, WHICH RIDE HALFWAY OUT IF NOT LOCKED. WITH THE PWR ON AND (UNKNOWINGLY) SPOILERS 1/2 DEPLOYED, THE AIRSPD DECAYED. I ASKED FOR AND WAS GIVEN A LNDG CLRNC (AS THE PLANE AHEAD CLRED THE RWY). I STAGGERED ONTO THE RWY IN A FULL STALL, THEN REALIZED THE SPOILERS WERE UNLOCKED. THE TWR REPRIMANDED ME FOR ENTERING THE PATTERN WITHOUT ESTABLISHING 2-WAY COM. THIS SERIES OF ERRORS, MISCOMS AND HIGH WORKLOAD EVENTS LED TO A VERY DANGEROUS SIT -- TOO LOW AND TOO SLOW. HAD I BEEN LESS LUCKY THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A CRASH.
