Narrative:

Approaching lincoln from the southeast ATC put me on a 320 degree vector, cleared me to 3000 ft and asked me to report the field in sight. After reporting airport in sight, I was cleared for the visual for runway 17 and handed off to tower who cleared me to land runway 17 with an advisory of landing traffic on the parallel runway. The other airplane was also advised and acknowledged as did I. He was cleared to land straight in runway 18. I then turned left base for runway 17, looked inside to make a power adjustment and change flap setting. I then located the other airplane and estimated him about 2 mi away from me. I determined that I would be well ahead of him, but would begin my turn early so he could see that I was not going to infringe upon his flight path. However, when I turned my attention back to the airport, I focused on the first runway environment in front of me and that was the approach lighting system for runway 18. Runway 18 was now inadvertently my target. I remember thinking that I had reduced power a little too much for the distance yet to cover. That should have been my first clue to my mistake. Also a broader scan of the bigger picture would have prevented this incident. As I turned onto final, the C12 contacted tower and asked who was turning in front of them. The tower then instructed me to go around. The C12 pilot estimated that we were about a mi apart at that time.

Title: A MIL BEECHCRAFT WAS ISSUED A GAR ON APCH TO RWY 18 AT LNK WHEN A CIVILIAN C310 MAKES AN APCH TO RWY 18 AFTER BEING CLRED A VISUAL ON RWY 17 AND RPTING THE C12 IN SIGHT.

Narrative: APCHING LINCOLN FROM THE SE ATC PUT ME ON A 320 DEG VECTOR, CLRED ME TO 3000 FT AND ASKED ME TO RPT THE FIELD IN SIGHT. AFTER RPTING ARPT IN SIGHT, I WAS CLRED FOR THE VISUAL FOR RWY 17 AND HANDED OFF TO TWR WHO CLRED ME TO LAND RWY 17 WITH AN ADVISORY OF LNDG TFC ON THE PARALLEL RWY. THE OTHER AIRPLANE WAS ALSO ADVISED AND ACKNOWLEDGED AS DID I. HE WAS CLRED TO LAND STRAIGHT IN RWY 18. I THEN TURNED L BASE FOR RWY 17, LOOKED INSIDE TO MAKE A PWR ADJUSTMENT AND CHANGE FLAP SETTING. I THEN LOCATED THE OTHER AIRPLANE AND ESTIMATED HIM ABOUT 2 MI AWAY FROM ME. I DETERMINED THAT I WOULD BE WELL AHEAD OF HIM, BUT WOULD BEGIN MY TURN EARLY SO HE COULD SEE THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO INFRINGE UPON HIS FLT PATH. HOWEVER, WHEN I TURNED MY ATTN BACK TO THE ARPT, I FOCUSED ON THE FIRST RWY ENVIRONMENT IN FRONT OF ME AND THAT WAS THE APCH LIGHTING SYS FOR RWY 18. RWY 18 WAS NOW INADVERTENTLY MY TARGET. I REMEMBER THINKING THAT I HAD REDUCED PWR A LITTLE TOO MUCH FOR THE DISTANCE YET TO COVER. THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MY FIRST CLUE TO MY MISTAKE. ALSO A BROADER SCAN OF THE BIGGER PICTURE WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS INCIDENT. AS I TURNED ONTO FINAL, THE C12 CONTACTED TWR AND ASKED WHO WAS TURNING IN FRONT OF THEM. THE TWR THEN INSTRUCTED ME TO GO AROUND. THE C12 PLT ESTIMATED THAT WE WERE ABOUT A MI APART AT THAT TIME.
