Narrative:

I was sent from ZZZ1 to work the right pack system on an aircraft on the ground in ZZZ (road trip). During the troubleshooting and replacement of the regulator valve for the right pack system, the wrong part number was installed in its place. The parts look the same, however they have different part numbers. This problem was not discovered until the following night when we tried to ship the part back to ZZZ2 and the different part number was noticed in the computer. However, this difference in part number would have been noticed sooner, and not caused a problem if it were not for being an out of town trip.
