Narrative:

Takeoff on runway 27R at atl, departure vector 250 degrees. 2 prominent WX cells indicating red on WX radar level 3-5 on 250 degree heading. Requested to hold 270 degrees heading momentarily to clear WX. Departure controller advised that it was only level 1, turn to 250 degrees. We declined request 260 degrees. Departure advised needed to clear departure traffic off runway 26L. TCASII showed traffic 2 NM and diverging, held 260 degrees until on top. At approximately 8000 ft, visually acquired WX cell and began a slow turn to 250 degree heading passing WX. While maneuvering, exceeded altitude clearance to 10000 ft. Leveled at 10400 ft and immediately returned to 10000 ft. Vectored to 180 degrees then 150 degrees -- light to moderate turbulence throughout. No traffic conflict. Controller insisted on turning us into WX cells immediately after takeoff. Aircraft close to maximum gross weight, maximum performance takeoff at night into IMC. 1 hour departure delay due to airport closed due to thunderstorms. Departure controller had an argumentative and antagonistic attitude, insisting WX level 1, when aircraft radar showed level 3-5. Distraction all 3 pilots, causing primary attention to be directed to getting around WX as soon as possible to keep controller happy. Suggest ATC respect aircraft WX radar indications, usually better than departure radar. Aircraft should have been on autoplt sooner.

DISTR ALL 3 PLTS, CAUSING PRIMARY ATTN TO BE DIRECTED TO GETTING AROUND WX ASAP TO KEEP CTLR HAPPY. SUGGEST ATC RESPECT ACFT WX RADAR INDICATIONS, USUALLY BETTER THAN DEP RADAR. ACFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON AUTOPLT SOONER.
