Narrative:

On downwind for runway 23R, we received a TCASII alert for an approaching GA aircraft that was climbing through 4000 ft. ATC told him to maintain 4000 ft, but he continued his climb. We received a TA, followed by an RA, instructing us to climb. ATC also told us to climb from 5000 ft to 6000 ft immediately. The jumpseater on our aircraft saw the conflicting aircraft. He estimated the GA aircraft came within 150 ft of hitting us. Our TCASII and the quick reaction of the controller saved the day by preventing a midair collision. The pilot and the GA aircraft were told to call knoxville approach after landing to discuss a possible altitude deviation. This was a very close call that could have been prevented by the GA pilot complying with the ATC controller's instructions.

Title: B727 FLT CREW RESPONDS TO TCASII RA AND ATC ALERT TO AVOID COLLISION WITH SMA THAT WAS CLBING ABOVE ITS ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: ON DOWNWIND FOR RWY 23R, WE RECEIVED A TCASII ALERT FOR AN APCHING GA ACFT THAT WAS CLBING THROUGH 4000 FT. ATC TOLD HIM TO MAINTAIN 4000 FT, BUT HE CONTINUED HIS CLB. WE RECEIVED A TA, FOLLOWED BY AN RA, INSTRUCTING US TO CLB. ATC ALSO TOLD US TO CLB FROM 5000 FT TO 6000 FT IMMEDIATELY. THE JUMPSEATER ON OUR ACFT SAW THE CONFLICTING ACFT. HE ESTIMATED THE GA ACFT CAME WITHIN 150 FT OF HITTING US. OUR TCASII AND THE QUICK REACTION OF THE CTLR SAVED THE DAY BY PREVENTING A MIDAIR COLLISION. THE PLT AND THE GA ACFT WERE TOLD TO CALL KNOXVILLE APCH AFTER LNDG TO DISCUSS A POSSIBLE ALTDEV. THIS WAS A VERY CLOSE CALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY THE GA PLT COMPLYING WITH THE ATC CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS.
