Narrative:

On taxi out we were given the ATC clearance, 'cleared to, guam as filed XXXX (transponder code), climb and maintain FL350. We were not sure what the alpha designation was prior to the transponder code and the first officer was instructed to question the clearance which was read back the same way. Both language and poor radio equipment was a problem at this destination. After takeoff the PF turned to a heading of 060 degrees for the vector climb to 13000 ft prior to turning direct to lipot. During climb out a second controller, perhaps a supervisor, came on the radio and asked us if we were flying the lipot 1, alpha departure, which we were not. He questioned again what procedure we were given and the PNF said we were flying the normal radar vector departure. The controller made no further effort to correct the situation which we believed to be a language problem with the ground controller, who had issued the flight clearance. We were handed over to the next controller and the remainder of the flight was uneventful.

Title: HDG TRACK DEV BY A B737 FLT CREW ON AN EXTENDED OVERWATER FLT, NIGHT OP, WHEN FLYING A VECTORED DEP VERSUS THE ATC EXPECTED SID FROM BALI, WRRR, FO.

Narrative: ON TAXI OUT WE WERE GIVEN THE ATC CLRNC, 'CLRED TO, GUAM AS FILED XXXX (XPONDER CODE), CLB AND MAINTAIN FL350. WE WERE NOT SURE WHAT THE ALPHA DESIGNATION WAS PRIOR TO THE XPONDER CODE AND THE FO WAS INSTRUCTED TO QUESTION THE CLRNC WHICH WAS READ BACK THE SAME WAY. BOTH LANGUAGE AND POOR RADIO EQUIP WAS A PROB AT THIS DEST. AFTER TKOF THE PF TURNED TO A HDG OF 060 DEGS FOR THE VECTOR CLB TO 13000 FT PRIOR TO TURNING DIRECT TO LIPOT. DURING CLBOUT A SECOND CTLR, PERHAPS A SUPVR, CAME ON THE RADIO AND ASKED US IF WE WERE FLYING THE LIPOT 1, ALPHA DEP, WHICH WE WERE NOT. HE QUESTIONED AGAIN WHAT PROC WE WERE GIVEN AND THE PNF SAID WE WERE FLYING THE NORMAL RADAR VECTOR DEP. THE CTLR MADE NO FURTHER EFFORT TO CORRECT THE SIT WHICH WE BELIEVED TO BE A LANGUAGE PROB WITH THE GND CTLR, WHO HAD ISSUED THE FLT CLRNC. WE WERE HANDED OVER TO THE NEXT CTLR AND THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
