Narrative:

While tracking the 138 degree radial to oak (116.8) on the jaws arrival to sjc at approximately 27-30 DME, norcal approach cleared us to descend from 6000 ft to 5000 ft. We received a terrain warning at approximately 5300 ft. I instructed the first officer flying to climb and reported this to approach. We were mostly VFR and could see we were not in close proximity to the ground. Thinking that our equipment was possibly faulty, I inquired of approach if they had any other aircraft report this problem. Approach indicated that several other aircraft had experienced the same warning. After landing, I telephoned the approach control to discuss this. They have had complaints from other aircraft but said their minimum vectoring altitude was 4500 ft in the area. We were approximately 10 NM southwest of sjc. The MSA for sjc is 5500 ft on the approach chart. I recommended to the supervisor that they investigate this apparent problem. No separation deviation occurred.

Title: A VMC DSNDING MD80 FLT CREW EXPERIENCES AND REACTS TO A GPWS ALERT AT 5300 FT ABOUT 10 NM SE OF SJC, CA.

Narrative: WHILE TRACKING THE 138 DEG RADIAL TO OAK (116.8) ON THE JAWS ARR TO SJC AT APPROX 27-30 DME, NORCAL APCH CLRED US TO DSND FROM 6000 FT TO 5000 FT. WE RECEIVED A TERRAIN WARNING AT APPROX 5300 FT. I INSTRUCTED THE FO FLYING TO CLB AND RPTED THIS TO APCH. WE WERE MOSTLY VFR AND COULD SEE WE WERE NOT IN CLOSE PROX TO THE GND. THINKING THAT OUR EQUIP WAS POSSIBLY FAULTY, I INQUIRED OF APCH IF THEY HAD ANY OTHER ACFT RPT THIS PROB. APCH INDICATED THAT SEVERAL OTHER ACFT HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME WARNING. AFTER LNDG, I TELEPHONED THE APCH CTL TO DISCUSS THIS. THEY HAVE HAD COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER ACFT BUT SAID THEIR MINIMUM VECTORING ALT WAS 4500 FT IN THE AREA. WE WERE APPROX 10 NM SW OF SJC. THE MSA FOR SJC IS 5500 FT ON THE APCH CHART. I RECOMMENDED TO THE SUPVR THAT THEY INVESTIGATE THIS APPARENT PROB. NO SEPARATION DEV OCCURRED.
