Narrative:

Inbound to avp. Level 10000 ft. ATC pointed out traffic at our 10 O'clock position. We advised we had him in sight. He told us to maintain visual with that aircraft and descend to 9000 ft. We started a slow descent to 9000 ft. Noted on TCASII that aircraft was crossing very close. We then got a 'monitor vertical speed' quickly followed by a 'climb.' disconnected autoplt and flight director and climbed 200-300 ft until 'clear of conflict' announced. The ATC sector passed us off to avp approach. In hindsight, I will never accept a visual descent based on traffic in sight. Better to remain high and get vectored down later.

Title: CL65 AT 10000 FT WITH ZNY, MAINTAINING VISUAL SEPARATION WITH XING TFC, EXPERIENCED TCASII RA AND CLBED.

Narrative: INBOUND TO AVP. LEVEL 10000 FT. ATC POINTED OUT TFC AT OUR 10 O'CLOCK POS. WE ADVISED WE HAD HIM IN SIGHT. HE TOLD US TO MAINTAIN VISUAL WITH THAT ACFT AND DSND TO 9000 FT. WE STARTED A SLOW DSCNT TO 9000 FT. NOTED ON TCASII THAT ACFT WAS XING VERY CLOSE. WE THEN GOT A 'MONITOR VERT SPD' QUICKLY FOLLOWED BY A 'CLB.' DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND FLT DIRECTOR AND CLBED 200-300 FT UNTIL 'CLR OF CONFLICT' ANNOUNCED. THE ATC SECTOR PASSED US OFF TO AVP APCH. IN HINDSIGHT, I WILL NEVER ACCEPT A VISUAL DSCNT BASED ON TFC IN SIGHT. BETTER TO REMAIN HIGH AND GET VECTORED DOWN LATER.
