Narrative:

Ipt, after being cleared for takeoff, we commenced a 300 degree heading after 1000 ft for obstacle departure procedure. Ipt tower handed us off to departure. We checked in and leveled off at our initial altitude, heading 300 degrees. After a few mins, I asked for direct etx (our next fix). Departure came back and advised that we were given direct etx after takeoff from tower. The first officer and I agreed that we were not given that instruction and asked if we could go direct etx. Departure agreed, we turned direct to etx, and were on our way. Looking back, if we would have turned direct etx after takeoff, there could have been a chance that we would not have cleared the 2200 ft mountain just south of the field. I am glad we followed the published departure obstacle procedure. The flight continued without incident.
