Narrative:

1 hour before landing, I left the cockpit to use the forward lavatory. In accordance with security procedures, a flight attendant stayed with the first officer while I was gone. I called the cockpit for re-admittance, and before I could say anything, the flight attendant opened the door as the first officer had the PA and said 'death to the infidels.' not good! The first officer did apologize to everyone, but what was he thinking? He was previously a DC9 captain, and that hand set (on the DC9) was used for intercom. I think the combination of poor judgement and A320 communication system led to this.
