Narrative:

On base leg to intercept runway 4L localizer, ILS approach, jfk, autoplt and flight director captured GS and initiated descent. Localizer was captured. Flight director continued to command descent. Disconnected autoplt and flight director, continued approach raw data. Attempted to reconnect flight director -- unsuccessful. Performed missed approach. Vectored for another approach to runway 4R ILS jfk. Flight director and autoplt worked fine. Suspected factors involved: 1) unprotected ILS approachs to runway 4L ILS at jfk. Aircraft taking off while approachs being conducted. 2) vectored to intercept localizer and GS at FAF. 3) tailwinds in excess of 20 KTS at GS intercept altitudes. 4) last assigned airspeed 210 KIAS on base leg.

Title: B757 INITIATES GAR AT JFK DUE TO EQUIP PROB, SHORT TURN-ON, SPD AND WINDS.

Narrative: ON BASE LEG TO INTERCEPT RWY 4L LOC, ILS APCH, JFK, AUTOPLT AND FLT DIRECTOR CAPTURED GS AND INITIATED DSCNT. LOC WAS CAPTURED. FLT DIRECTOR CONTINUED TO COMMAND DSCNT. DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND FLT DIRECTOR, CONTINUED APCH RAW DATA. ATTEMPTED TO RECONNECT FLT DIRECTOR -- UNSUCCESSFUL. PERFORMED MISSED APCH. VECTORED FOR ANOTHER APCH TO RWY 4R ILS JFK. FLT DIRECTOR AND AUTOPLT WORKED FINE. SUSPECTED FACTORS INVOLVED: 1) UNPROTECTED ILS APCHS TO RWY 4L ILS AT JFK. ACFT TAKING OFF WHILE APCHS BEING CONDUCTED. 2) VECTORED TO INTERCEPT LOC AND GS AT FAF. 3) TAILWINDS IN EXCESS OF 20 KTS AT GS INTERCEPT ALTS. 4) LAST ASSIGNED AIRSPD 210 KIAS ON BASE LEG.
