Narrative:

When gear was lowered for landing we got an amber gear light, no left gear down light and a left side brace EICAS message. This was at about 1500 ft so we cycled the gear and got the same results. Notified tower, declared an emergency, raised the gear and went around. Told departure that we needed time to run the checklist and talk to company. Fuel was now approximately 24000 pounds. We accomplished the left drag brace/side brace procedure. Maintenance also had us manually lower the gear. Still had unsafe gear indication and now had status message. 'Landing gear-monitor.' did a fly-by and both tower and maintenance reported that gear appeared to be down. Left the gear down and came back for an uneventful landing. Stopped on the runway, had the landing gear pinned and maintenance cleared us to taxi to the gate. Shut down at the gate with 16500 pounds. Maintenance came up to the cockpit and told us that the tread had separated from the #6 tire and knocked off the side brace monitor and also did some damage to the flaps. We did a 5 degree flap, maximum gross weight takeoff at departure airport. The takeoff felt normal and the flight attendants said that they did not experience anything unusual.
