Narrative:

Filed IFR flight plan from cdw, nj, to mgj, ny, via duats. Departed ddw at XA10. Cleared for the ILS 3 approach into mgj, and executed the approach. The controller said he would cancel my IFR flight plan. Landed at mgj approximately XA05. Had some refreshments at the FBO, and taxied to runway 26 to depart mgj VFR. At XB50, was advised on the unicom frequency at mgj to contact new york approach. I was told to call ZNY, which I did at XB59. The new york TRACON supervisor said I did not close my flight plan, and he had instituted search and rescue. I related that the controller said he would close my flight plan. I apologized for the misunderstanding, and any inconvenience that may have been caused. The TRACON supervisor said I was not being punished, but I should be mindful of closing the flight plans with an FSS.
