Narrative:

A CSD failure on the left engine driven generator necessitated a return to the departure airport as the APU was on placard and we were down to a single generator. We did not declare an emergency as it was VMC and we had the airport in sight. We landed slightly overweight (131.4 pounds) having configured early while being vectored for the approach in an attempt to burn down to maximum landing weight. After arrival, we reviewed flight manual part 1 and realized that an overweight landing is deemed emergency and, therefore, we should have declared an emergency before making the overweight landing.

Title: AN MD80 FLT CREW EXPERIENCE A CSD FAILURE AND DECIDE TO LAND OVERWT BECAUSE THE APU WAS DEFERRED AND THEY WERE DOWN TO 1 GENERATOR. THEY DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER WHICH WAS REQUIRED FOR OVERWT LNDGS.

WE DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER AS IT WAS VMC AND WE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT. WE LANDED SLIGHTLY OVERWT (131.4 LBS) HAVING CONFIGURED EARLY WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR THE APCH IN AN ATTEMPT TO BURN DOWN TO MAX LNDG WT. AFTER ARR, WE REVIEWED FLT MANUAL PART 1 AND REALIZED THAT AN OVERWT LNDG IS DEEMED EMER AND, THEREFORE, WE SHOULD HAVE DECLARED AN EMER BEFORE MAKING THE OVERWT LNDG.
