Narrative:
Potomac informed us that radar service was terminated, and to contact tower. While switching frequencys there was confusion whether we were on IFR clearance (we being, myself and IFR instructor). I then squawked VFR (1200). We were never briefed from flight services not to do so inside an ADIZ zone.

Title: STUDENT PLT AND INSTRUCTOR PLT VIOLATE DC ADIZ WHEN THEY SQUAWK VFR AFTER PCT CTLR ADVISED RADAR SVC TERMINATED.
Narrative: POTOMAC INFORMED US THAT RADAR SVC WAS TERMINATED, AND TO CONTACT TWR. WHILE SWITCHING FREQS THERE WAS CONFUSION WHETHER WE WERE ON IFR CLRNC (WE BEING, MYSELF AND IFR INSTRUCTOR). I THEN SQUAWKED VFR (1200). WE WERE NEVER BRIEFED FROM FLT SVCS NOT TO DO SO INSIDE AN ADIZ ZONE.
