Narrative:

As we were turning from downwind to base for runway 1, after being cleared for the visual approach and being turned over to the tower, the flight engineer spotted an aircraft approaching from about the 9 O'clock position on a southwest track as we were in the turn. I altered course to the right and the other pilot then went to the left. We advised the tower. The tower called the aircraft by his n-number and said 'I thought you said you were going southwest,' to which the pilot replied, 'I am going southwest.' nothing more was said.
