Narrative:

Scheduled originally for deadheading ord-den XB30 on flight abc. At XA15, received a call from scheduling at the hotel room. I was just leaving for the airport. Scheduling reassigned me to a deadheading at XD00 on flight abd. I wanted to catch the XB30 flight and spend the extra time in den. They said for legality I had to catch the XD00 flight. I tried to explain that my duty day had already begun but they said it was reset to XD00 when the new deadheading was now scheduled. Unable to sleep on the aircraft at XD00, flight abd, unable to go back to sleep at hotel before the flight. The fact that scheduling made it look good on paper I was actually starting my duty day 2 1/2 hours before it showed on my identify. These kinds of reassignments are absurd. If I was pulling into the parking lot 1 1/2 hours before check-in and scheduling wants to reset my clock then, would it be legal? I know that in the interest of safety that I can claim crew fatigue and I will. However, if I got off the aircraft in msy it would have created more problems for all concerned - passenger, crew, scheduling, etc. A timely change the night before and we wouldn't be discussing this. I want to 'pull the rope in the same direction' and fly. However, this kind of abuse will result in not answering the phone, increase in sick leave, crew fatigues, etc.

Title: AN A319 CAPT'S RPT ON RESCHEDULING OF CREWS AFTER THEY ARE ON A 'RPT MODE' FOR EITHER A FLT OR DEADHEADING TO PROTECT A FLT AT ORD, IL.

Narrative: SCHEDULED ORIGINALLY FOR DEADHEADING ORD-DEN XB30 ON FLT ABC. AT XA15, RECEIVED A CALL FROM SCHEDULING AT THE HOTEL ROOM. I WAS JUST LEAVING FOR THE ARPT. SCHEDULING REASSIGNED ME TO A DEADHEADING AT XD00 ON FLT ABD. I WANTED TO CATCH THE XB30 FLT AND SPEND THE EXTRA TIME IN DEN. THEY SAID FOR LEGALITY I HAD TO CATCH THE XD00 FLT. I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT MY DUTY DAY HAD ALREADY BEGUN BUT THEY SAID IT WAS RESET TO XD00 WHEN THE NEW DEADHEADING WAS NOW SCHEDULED. UNABLE TO SLEEP ON THE ACFT AT XD00, FLT ABD, UNABLE TO GO BACK TO SLEEP AT HOTEL BEFORE THE FLT. THE FACT THAT SCHEDULING MADE IT LOOK GOOD ON PAPER I WAS ACTUALLY STARTING MY DUTY DAY 2 1/2 HRS BEFORE IT SHOWED ON MY IDENT. THESE KINDS OF REASSIGNMENTS ARE ABSURD. IF I WAS PULLING INTO THE PARKING LOT 1 1/2 HRS BEFORE CHK-IN AND SCHEDULING WANTS TO RESET MY CLOCK THEN, WOULD IT BE LEGAL? I KNOW THAT IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY THAT I CAN CLAIM CREW FATIGUE AND I WILL. HOWEVER, IF I GOT OFF THE ACFT IN MSY IT WOULD HAVE CREATED MORE PROBS FOR ALL CONCERNED - PAX, CREW, SCHEDULING, ETC.
