Narrative:

On approach to san at 6000 ft, we were intercepting the localizer runway 27 course approximately 20 mi east of the field. The ground track was going to take us through a large plume of dark smoke. Considering turbulence and smoke, I abruptly turned the aircraft to the right to a heading of 090 degrees. We did this initial turn without clearance from ATC, but within seconds, we received a clearance to proceed as requested. We diverted to psp. We felt this was the safest and best course of action.
