Narrative:

I filed an ADIZ flight plan with leesburg FSS. Flight plan for VFR flight from hef to cge, for an XB00 departure and XG00 return. I received an ADIZ clearance from hef tower, a squawk and departure frequency. Departed from runway 16R and proceeded southwest to csn VOR. Called potomac approach. Controller was busy due to high traffic on weekend VFR day. No acknowledgement of radar contact. After heading to csn for approximately 7 mins, requested a turn to brv VOR. Was given a standby. A few mins later, controller called and said, 'clear of ADIZ, squawk 1200 proceed on course.' I turned to heading of 090 degrees to brv. I continued 'on course' via brv to cbe. In doing so, I entered the edge of the southern limit of the ADIZ. I continued flight as planned to cge. At cge, I was requested to call potomac TRACON. I was advised that I had flown through the ADIZ without a discrete code. Suggestions: I should have queried the controller as to route of flight since it was questionable as to the procedure for a flight through the ADIZ. I should have requested flight following which would have required a discrete code. On the return trip, I contacted patuxent approach and requested flight following and activation of my flight plan. The return flight was essentially the same route with several handoffs. I will use this experience to assist other pilots in the use and procedures of the tfr/ADIZ.

Title: AFTER LEAVING THE DC ADIZ AFTER DEP FROM HEF, VFR PLT ALLOWED HIS ADIZ CLRNC TO BE CANCELED AND THEN REENTERED THE SOUTHERN EDGE ENRTE TO HIS DEST, CGE.

Narrative: I FILED AN ADIZ FLT PLAN WITH LEESBURG FSS. FLT PLAN FOR VFR FLT FROM HEF TO CGE, FOR AN XB00 DEP AND XG00 RETURN. I RECEIVED AN ADIZ CLRNC FROM HEF TWR, A SQUAWK AND DEP FREQ. DEPARTED FROM RWY 16R AND PROCEEDED SW TO CSN VOR. CALLED POTOMAC APCH. CTLR WAS BUSY DUE TO HIGH TFC ON WEEKEND VFR DAY. NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RADAR CONTACT. AFTER HEADING TO CSN FOR APPROX 7 MINS, REQUESTED A TURN TO BRV VOR. WAS GIVEN A STANDBY. A FEW MINS LATER, CTLR CALLED AND SAID, 'CLR OF ADIZ, SQUAWK 1200 PROCEED ON COURSE.' I TURNED TO HEADING OF 090 DEGS TO BRV. I CONTINUED 'ON COURSE' VIA BRV TO CBE. IN DOING SO, I ENTERED THE EDGE OF THE SOUTHERN LIMIT OF THE ADIZ. I CONTINUED FLT AS PLANNED TO CGE. AT CGE, I WAS REQUESTED TO CALL POTOMAC TRACON. I WAS ADVISED THAT I HAD FLOWN THROUGH THE ADIZ WITHOUT A DISCRETE CODE. SUGGESTIONS: I SHOULD HAVE QUERIED THE CTLR AS TO RTE OF FLT SINCE IT WAS QUESTIONABLE AS TO THE PROC FOR A FLT THROUGH THE ADIZ. I SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED FLT FOLLOWING WHICH WOULD HAVE REQUIRED A DISCRETE CODE. ON THE RETURN TRIP, I CONTACTED PATUXENT APCH AND REQUESTED FLT FOLLOWING AND ACTIVATION OF MY FLT PLAN. THE RETURN FLT WAS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME RTE WITH SEVERAL HDOFS. I WILL USE THIS EXPERIENCE TO ASSIST OTHER PLTS IN THE USE AND PROCS OF THE TFR/ADIZ.
