Narrative:

On the morning of oct/sat/03, I was cleared to taxi to runway 29R at zamperini field, torrance, ca. My wife, also a pilot, was in the right seat. Our aircraft was cleared for 'position and hold runway 29R' we thought and understood. However, after entering the runway we were asked to return behind the hold line. There was no conflict with landing traffic. The tower seemed confused. Aircraft were called by the wrong 'north' numbers. No one was advised about the expected release time -- IFR release. Tower personnel must communicate clearly.
