Narrative:
I was flying a heading of about 280 degrees toward fit. My passenger (my wife) is also a licensed pilot and it is our practice to both look for traffic no matter which one of us is PIC. She suddenly said 'airplane under us' and I immediately pulled up. When I saw it, it was passing behind and to the left and appeared to have crossed from about our 4 O'clock position. My passenger said that was about its position and direction when she saw it pass under our right wing. I cannot say what our vertical separation was but I believe it was less than 500 ft. I also believe it was a cessna 172. It continued on its course and I continued toward fit.
