Narrative:

During an extended downwind more than 25 mi, ATC said traffic to follow was approximately 2 O'clock position. The PF and PNF both saw traffic passing abeam. PNF said traffic abeam was in sight, PNF stressed that traffic to follow was to the 3 O'clock position abeam. ATC advised that was the traffic to follow and cleared a visual approach. Upon turning base saw traffic close in trail was actual traffic to follow. ATC issued correction, other traffic to follow, said we were in sight and approach continued without incident. The problem in this situation was aircraft from multiple directions converging and ATC pressure to take a visual approach when an ILS clearance, or at least vectoring, on to the final course then clearing a visual would prevent conflicts when 3 or more aircraft converging from different directions.

Title: AT72. THE APCH CTLR IDENTED THE WRONG ACFT TO FOLLOW ON A VISUAL APCH IN SJU CLASS E. AFTER THE CREW QUESTIONED THE ACFT TO FOLLOW, THE APCH CTLR ISSUED A CORRECTION.

Narrative: DURING AN EXTENDED DOWNWIND MORE THAN 25 MI, ATC SAID TFC TO FOLLOW WAS APPROX 2 O'CLOCK POS. THE PF AND PNF BOTH SAW TFC PASSING ABEAM. PNF SAID TFC ABEAM WAS IN SIGHT, PNF STRESSED THAT TFC TO FOLLOW WAS TO THE 3 O'CLOCK POS ABEAM. ATC ADVISED THAT WAS THE TFC TO FOLLOW AND CLRED A VISUAL APCH. UPON TURNING BASE SAW TFC CLOSE IN TRAIL WAS ACTUAL TFC TO FOLLOW. ATC ISSUED CORRECTION, OTHER TFC TO FOLLOW, SAID WE WERE IN SIGHT AND APCH CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE PROB IN THIS SIT WAS ACFT FROM MULTIPLE DIRECTIONS CONVERGING AND ATC PRESSURE TO TAKE A VISUAL APCH WHEN AN ILS CLRNC, OR AT LEAST VECTORING, ON TO THE FINAL COURSE THEN CLRING A VISUAL WOULD PREVENT CONFLICTS WHEN 3 OR MORE ACFT CONVERGING FROM DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.
