Narrative:

During climb out was cleared to 14000 ft we heard an unusual noise then smelled burning smell in aircraft, masks had also fallen. Leveled aircraft off immediately. Cabin was only at 5000 ft or under. Did not declare emergency as we requested lower altitude. I was cleared to 12000 ft but in assessing my situation, expecting it to be electrical but not seeing any other indications I was hand flying aircraft dealing with passenger and likely was not doing a good job of holding the assigned altitude. I believe we/I got to 11500 ft. Smell did not come back and cabin altitude was never a problem. We were vectored and then made uneventful landing back at palm beach. I am writing this because of altitude deviation. Possibly could have declared emergency but held off because we knew that we had to deal with aircraft first, then if needed we would declare emergency.

Title: ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT BY THE PIC OF AN L1329 DURING HIS DEALING WITH AN ACFT EQUIP PROB AND A RETURN LAND TO PBI, FL.

Narrative: DURING CLBOUT WAS CLRED TO 14000 FT WE HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE THEN SMELLED BURNING SMELL IN ACFT, MASKS HAD ALSO FALLEN. LEVELED ACFT OFF IMMEDIATELY. CABIN WAS ONLY AT 5000 FT OR UNDER. DID NOT DECLARE EMER AS WE REQUESTED LOWER ALT. I WAS CLRED TO 12000 FT BUT IN ASSESSING MY SIT, EXPECTING IT TO BE ELECTRICAL BUT NOT SEEING ANY OTHER INDICATIONS I WAS HAND FLYING ACFT DEALING WITH PAX AND LIKELY WAS NOT DOING A GOOD JOB OF HOLDING THE ASSIGNED ALT. I BELIEVE WE/I GOT TO 11500 FT. SMELL DID NOT COME BACK AND CABIN ALT WAS NEVER A PROB. WE WERE VECTORED AND THEN MADE UNEVENTFUL LNDG BACK AT PALM BEACH. I AM WRITING THIS BECAUSE OF ALTDEV. POSSIBLY COULD HAVE DECLARED EMER BUT HELD OFF BECAUSE WE KNEW THAT WE HAD TO DEAL WITH ACFT FIRST, THEN IF NEEDED WE WOULD DECLARE EMER.
