Narrative:
Preparing for a training flight, currency and flying to complete 'wings' program requirement. Checked WX and NOTAMS msn-dll. After landing at sugar ridge, a private strip near msn, my instructor and I decided to fly to lnr for lunch. Upon overflying the lnr airport, we observed a yellow 'X' on the far west end of the airport. No other markings. I had checked NOTAMS for the area on the same day. Puzzled, we landed on runway 18. Taxied to restaurant and were told the airport was closed. I observed 2 men standing by an automobile on the end of the taxiway. They were construction people planning to paint a runway. They said they were waiting for equipment to arrive in 1 hour. They said to go ahead and eat as it would be an hour before they started. We departed on runway 18 within the hour and observed a yellow 'X' had been put at the end of runway 27. The moral of this story: be very thorough checking NOTAMS. I did check NOTAMS prior to departure, but not well enough.
