Narrative:

Departed bos logan airport, handed off to departure, instructed to fly 270 degree heading and climb to 5000 ft. As we approached 4000 ft, ATC advised traffic at 2 O'clock position, 4 mi, 5000 ft swbound. Climbing through 4500 ft, we spotted the traffic, a B757 at 2 O'clock position, and about 4 mi. ATC called and ordered an immediate descent to 4000 ft and advised we were assigned only 4000 ft. We still had the traffic in sight and the captain and I were sure we had been given 5000 ft. We passed below and behind the traffic with no conflict.
