Narrative:

Contacted tower, advised 5 mi out, at handoff from approach control, squawk change to 1200. Tower advised runway 13 right base, asked me to report when entering right base. Then changed to straight in runway 4, 3 mi final. I was about 3 mi out then I thought he was advising me that I was on a 3 mi final. In conversation after landing, tower advised me he had wanted to report at a 3 mi final. I then talked to the tower about parking and plans for taxiing to parking and then landed. Upon landing, tower informed me I had not been cleared to land. No other aircraft on field. Consulted with tower by phone afterwards and he was very helpful. I thought he was watching me all the way down because we were talking. He didn't see me until after I had landed.
