Narrative:

I had a squawk code, assigned by bwi controllers, to fme (fort meade). I was 7 mi southwest, and out of class B airspace, but within the ADIZ. After several takeoffs and lndgs with a low time student, we stopped for a coke and to discuss pattern work. We resumed pattern work and, after first landing, I was informed by unicom operator to call potomac TRACON. My student switched squawk to 1200 before resuming pattern work and I did not catch it. I thought we were squawking our assigned code. I called TRACON immediately and gave them my information. I was informed that I would be contacted by the FAA. I asked for, and received, a new code, and continued pattern work.
