Narrative:

Flight departed avl at XA00 local time for rdu. The usual rteing was obtained and complied with. At approximately XB00 local, while under the control of greensboro approach, I noted the DME from rdu to indicate 25 mi and increasing. We queried greensboro approach, who handed us off to raleigh approach control. Raleigh turned us 180 degrees, and vectored us in for the approach to runway 23 left. Increased vigilance and situational awareness, as well as less dependence on ATC, would have prevented the problem. Crew must take more responsibility for own navigation.
