Narrative:

Inbound flight had a write-up for cabin seat xo life vest cover broken. Maintenance placarded seat inoperative per maintenance controller thinking all seats would be full. I called maintenance controller to see if unusable seat was required for overland flight. They said yes, so issue was closed until gate agent requested that I call maintenance controller at 5 mins prior to departure. Maintenance controller said we could put a passenger in the seat and gave me a new MEL and new authority/authorized, and said he had entered same in computer. For some reason, I corrected those numbers on the maintenance side of the page. A lengthy delay for connecting passenger ensued and gave me time to reconsider my logbook action. I called maintenance back to the aircraft. Mechanic called his supervisor to witness voiding of original signoff and placarding.
