Narrative:

On an IFR flight plan, after landing on runway 30, with 'hold short runway 25R' from ATC and a heavy aircraft on approach behind us, we exited the runway as soon as practicable. As we approached the intersection of runway 30 with runway 25L, I turned at runway 25L onto its parallel taxiway. This involved a brief (5-10 second) turn onto runway 25L. I felt we were, by definition, cleared to cross runway 25L and that the brief turn into it would clear runway 30 quickly for following traffic and pose no safety threat since we were already cleared across it. Therefore, it was not, at the time, active. ATC advised we had turned onto an 'active runway.' in retrospect, that turn should not have been made without specific clearance, no matter how expedient. It is important never to forget training and procedure, no matter how 'logical' or 'expedient' it may seem. We have ATC/aviation procedures for a reason -- predictability and safety.

Title: PA32 LNDG LGB ENTERS XING RWY WHILE EXITING.

Narrative: ON AN IFR FLT PLAN, AFTER LNDG ON RWY 30, WITH 'HOLD SHORT RWY 25R' FROM ATC AND A HVY ACFT ON APCH BEHIND US, WE EXITED THE RWY AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE. AS WE APCHED THE INTXN OF RWY 30 WITH RWY 25L, I TURNED AT RWY 25L ONTO ITS PARALLEL TXWY. THIS INVOLVED A BRIEF (5-10 SECOND) TURN ONTO RWY 25L. I FELT WE WERE, BY DEFINITION, CLRED TO CROSS RWY 25L AND THAT THE BRIEF TURN INTO IT WOULD CLR RWY 30 QUICKLY FOR FOLLOWING TFC AND POSE NO SAFETY THREAT SINCE WE WERE ALREADY CLRED ACROSS IT. THEREFORE, IT WAS NOT, AT THE TIME, ACTIVE. ATC ADVISED WE HAD TURNED ONTO AN 'ACTIVE RWY.' IN RETROSPECT, THAT TURN SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE WITHOUT SPECIFIC CLRNC, NO MATTER HOW EXPEDIENT. IT IS IMPORTANT NEVER TO FORGET TRAINING AND PROC, NO MATTER HOW 'LOGICAL' OR 'EXPEDIENT' IT MAY SEEM. WE HAVE ATC/AVIATION PROCS FOR A REASON -- PREDICTABILITY AND SAFETY.
