Narrative:

Given quick reassignment to runway 22L for takeoff. Cleared for takeoff, but we reported we needed another min. Reclred to hold short. Reported ready and received a clearance cleared for takeoff fly heading 220 degrees. First officer read back clearance to me but requested heading to fly. Captain and first officer visually cleared slot as we taxied across the hold short. Tower then reported we were not cleared to take the runway and ordered us to taxi clear and hold on the other side. Later, captain held short conversation with supervisor on the land line and was told that they were busy and that we had not done anything wrong. Supplemental information from acn 585561: holding short of runway 22L we were cleared to take off and fly 220 degrees. Both the first officer and I heard this and the first officer read the clearance back to tower. As we took the runway tower told us to hold our position and that we were not cleared to take off. We were then instructed to cross the runway and hold in the pad on the other side.
