Narrative:

During taxi out to runway 16R at smf, missed hard right turn from taxiway A9 to proceed north on taxiway a to runway 16R. Taxiway A9 intersects runway 16R at about mid-field. I thought I knew my position, but missed or disregarded runway hold short signs. Realized my mistake when runway became visible, and made a hard stop approximately 350-400 ft short of runway. Ground control asked us to confirm we were holding short, which, of course, we were. Aircraft on final allowed to land on runway 16R, and rolled past our nose well clear. We were then instructed to back-taxi to another intersection, then continue to departure end runway 16R. Nothing is new in this incident, but the lessons here are pay attention. My first officer was busy with checklist duties and answering the cabin 'all seated' call from the first flight attendant. Other factors included conflicting taxiway traffic, late push back, possible jet fuel odors in cabin (they cleared after engine start), and a call from the cabin crew during push back for flight time information. No matter, both heads should be outside during a critical or unfamiliar taxi route.

Title: MD80 FLT CREW ALMOST HAS RWY INCURSION AT SMF.

Narrative: DURING TAXI OUT TO RWY 16R AT SMF, MISSED HARD R TURN FROM TXWY A9 TO PROCEED N ON TXWY A TO RWY 16R. TXWY A9 INTERSECTS RWY 16R AT ABOUT MID-FIELD. I THOUGHT I KNEW MY POS, BUT MISSED OR DISREGARDED RWY HOLD SHORT SIGNS. REALIZED MY MISTAKE WHEN RWY BECAME VISIBLE, AND MADE A HARD STOP APPROX 350-400 FT SHORT OF RWY. GND CTL ASKED US TO CONFIRM WE WERE HOLDING SHORT, WHICH, OF COURSE, WE WERE. ACFT ON FINAL ALLOWED TO LAND ON RWY 16R, AND ROLLED PAST OUR NOSE WELL CLR. WE WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO BACK-TAXI TO ANOTHER INTXN, THEN CONTINUE TO DEP END RWY 16R. NOTHING IS NEW IN THIS INCIDENT, BUT THE LESSONS HERE ARE PAY ATTN. MY FO WAS BUSY WITH CHKLIST DUTIES AND ANSWERING THE CABIN 'ALL SEATED' CALL FROM THE FIRST FLT ATTENDANT. OTHER FACTORS INCLUDED CONFLICTING TXWY TFC, LATE PUSH BACK, POSSIBLE JET FUEL ODORS IN CABIN (THEY CLRED AFTER ENG START), AND A CALL FROM THE CABIN CREW DURING PUSH BACK FOR FLT TIME INFO. NO MATTER, BOTH HEADS SHOULD BE OUTSIDE DURING A CRITICAL OR UNFAMILIAR TAXI RTE.
