Narrative:

Midway airport, captain flying aircraft, picked up clearance. I, PNF, commenced taxi checklist after getting ground clearance to taxi runway 4R via taxiway Y. I looked up and it looked like we were approaching a runway. I questioned captain, and he stated we were on correct taxiway. I saw no signs nor runway identifier sign to indicate otherwise. Ground questioned where we were going. They realized we had taxied across the active runway. No landing conflict with other aircraft. Remedy is: when in doubt, ask captain to stop aircraft and verify position.
