Narrative:

Problems started on taxi-out portion of flight. Problems leading up to event were unfamiliar with airport. Did not properly prepare for taxi (frequency, map). Adding to this was that it had been 9 months since last time in aircraft. First conflict/violation was that I taxied on a service road to get to active runway. Service road was marked clearly 'aircraft prohibited' on road surface, but failed to see due to small size of aircraft (C150). Admonished by ground. Took off. Flight was uneventful. Flew to another airport to do touch-and-goes and get current as rdu does not allow touch-and-goes. On return to rdu, after landing, I was told to clear active, taxi on taxiway a, cross another active runway. I read back instructions, but after crossing active failed to stop taxiing and continued to taxi to GA ramp. This was taxiing without a clearance. Factors leading up to this were unfamiliar with airport procedure and airport habits (meaning every airport has little idiosyncrasies that you must learn solely through repeated flts). Previous flight experience had been if tower gave a taxi clearance you were cleared to ramp or they said contact ground. Since I never heard the 'contact ground' from tower (it was not said) there was no memory key (meaning a phrase, light, sound that trips your memory to do something) to stop and contact ground. Tower said to contact them on phone. I called and apologized. They said it was forgiven, just next time be familiar before departure. In retrospect, tower kept me on frequency because I was crossing another active runway. You are only cleared as far as you are given taxi instructions, and tower is not required to tell you to contact ground -- although I like it when they do and sometimes check with them before I do if in doubt.

Title: C150 PLT TAXIES INTO PROHIBITED AREA WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DEPART AND UPON RETURN AFTER FLT TAXIES TO RAMP AREA WITHOUT CLRNC AT RDU.

Narrative: PROBS STARTED ON TAXI-OUT PORTION OF FLT. PROBS LEADING UP TO EVENT WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH ARPT. DID NOT PROPERLY PREPARE FOR TAXI (FREQ, MAP). ADDING TO THIS WAS THAT IT HAD BEEN 9 MONTHS SINCE LAST TIME IN ACFT. FIRST CONFLICT/VIOLATION WAS THAT I TAXIED ON A SVC ROAD TO GET TO ACTIVE RWY. SVC ROAD WAS MARKED CLRLY 'ACFT PROHIBITED' ON ROAD SURFACE, BUT FAILED TO SEE DUE TO SMALL SIZE OF ACFT (C150). ADMONISHED BY GND. TOOK OFF. FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. FLEW TO ANOTHER ARPT TO DO TOUCH-AND-GOES AND GET CURRENT AS RDU DOES NOT ALLOW TOUCH-AND-GOES. ON RETURN TO RDU, AFTER LNDG, I WAS TOLD TO CLR ACTIVE, TAXI ON TXWY A, CROSS ANOTHER ACTIVE RWY. I READ BACK INSTRUCTIONS, BUT AFTER XING ACTIVE FAILED TO STOP TAXIING AND CONTINUED TO TAXI TO GA RAMP. THIS WAS TAXIING WITHOUT A CLRNC. FACTORS LEADING UP TO THIS WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH ARPT PROC AND ARPT HABITS (MEANING EVERY ARPT HAS LITTLE IDIOSYNCRASIES THAT YOU MUST LEARN SOLELY THROUGH REPEATED FLTS). PREVIOUS FLT EXPERIENCE HAD BEEN IF TWR GAVE A TAXI CLRNC YOU WERE CLRED TO RAMP OR THEY SAID CONTACT GND. SINCE I NEVER HEARD THE 'CONTACT GND' FROM TWR (IT WAS NOT SAID) THERE WAS NO MEMORY KEY (MEANING A PHRASE, LIGHT, SOUND THAT TRIPS YOUR MEMORY TO DO SOMETHING) TO STOP AND CONTACT GND. TWR SAID TO CONTACT THEM ON PHONE. I CALLED AND APOLOGIZED. THEY SAID IT WAS FORGIVEN, JUST NEXT TIME BE FAMILIAR BEFORE DEP. IN RETROSPECT, TWR KEPT ME ON FREQ BECAUSE I WAS XING ANOTHER ACTIVE RWY. YOU ARE ONLY CLRED AS FAR AS YOU ARE GIVEN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS, AND TWR IS NOT REQUIRED TO TELL YOU TO CONTACT GND -- ALTHOUGH I LIKE IT WHEN THEY DO AND SOMETIMES CHK WITH THEM BEFORE I DO IF IN DOUBT.
