Narrative:

Kahalui company plate notation needs to advise pilots that there is adequate terrain clearance from haleakala volcano with ATC, 180 degree left turn clearance after takeoff from runway 20. Left turn after runway 29 takeoff shallowed initially to gain more altitude before turning toward haleakala to insure adequate terrain clearance as aircraft traversed northwest side of haleakala on its way toward the cluts waypoint. No guidance (ATC nor company page) provided indicating 'closed pattern,' 180 degree left turn after takeoff would provide adequate terrain separation. When after takeoff, it was apparent to us that a shallow turn was not necessary, we attempted to complete our 180 degree turn promptly. Then it was apparent by the controller's inflection that he was worried about our aircraft's close proximity to the side of haleakala. To eliminate any concerns the controller might have had, I called a visual on haleakala. Had I known from the outset that a 'closed pattern' 180 degree left turn after takeoff would provide adequate terrain separation, I would have directed one immediately after takeoff, thereby stemming any concerns regarding adequate terrain clearance from haleakala.

Title: B777-200 CAPT CONSIDERS HIS COMPANY'S ARPT BRIEFING PAGE DEFICIENT IN REGARDS TO TERRAIN OBSTRUCTION CLRNC WITH A 10034 FT MOUNTAIN SE OF THE ARPT AND QUESTIONABLE ATC ALERT.

Narrative: KAHALUI COMPANY PLATE NOTATION NEEDS TO ADVISE PLTS THAT THERE IS ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLRNC FROM HALEAKALA VOLCANO WITH ATC, 180 DEG L TURN CLRNC AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 20. L TURN AFTER RWY 29 TKOF SHALLOWED INITIALLY TO GAIN MORE ALT BEFORE TURNING TOWARD HALEAKALA TO INSURE ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLRNC AS ACFT TRAVERSED NW SIDE OF HALEAKALA ON ITS WAY TOWARD THE CLUTS WAYPOINT. NO GUIDANCE (ATC NOR COMPANY PAGE) PROVIDED INDICATING 'CLOSED PATTERN,' 180 DEG L TURN AFTER TKOF WOULD PROVIDE ADEQUATE TERRAIN SEPARATION. WHEN AFTER TKOF, IT WAS APPARENT TO US THAT A SHALLOW TURN WAS NOT NECESSARY, WE ATTEMPTED TO COMPLETE OUR 180 DEG TURN PROMPTLY. THEN IT WAS APPARENT BY THE CTLR'S INFLECTION THAT HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT OUR ACFT'S CLOSE PROX TO THE SIDE OF HALEAKALA. TO ELIMINATE ANY CONCERNS THE CTLR MIGHT HAVE HAD, I CALLED A VISUAL ON HALEAKALA. HAD I KNOWN FROM THE OUTSET THAT A 'CLOSED PATTERN' 180 DEG L TURN AFTER TKOF WOULD PROVIDE ADEQUATE TERRAIN SEPARATION, I WOULD HAVE DIRECTED ONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF, THEREBY STEMMING ANY CONCERNS REGARDING ADEQUATE TERRAIN CLRNC FROM HALEAKALA.
