Narrative:

Shortly after landing at FL350, #2 engine began a series of rapid compressor stalls, necessitating an in-flight shutdown of #2 engine. Aircraft was descended to FL240, and returned to nrt (rjaa) under radar control. VMC conditions prevailed throughout an uneventful 3 engine approach and landing to runway 34 nrt. No emergency was declared, and no traffic priority handling was requested. Flight handbook procedures were utilized to secure the #2 engine. Flight attendants were briefed not to prepare cabin for emergency evacuate/evacuation. Crash fire rescue equipment equipment was requested for landing at nrt (rjaa) and accompanied the aircraft to the gate. Fuel jettisoning was not utilized. Upon arrival at the gate at nrt, maintenance discovered numerous metal particles the size of bb's in the bottom of the exhaust pipe of #2 engine. At the time of engine shutdown, first officer was flying aircraft, but captain assumed PF duties for approach and landing.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER LNDG AT FL350, #2 ENG BEGAN A SERIES OF RAPID COMPRESSOR STALLS, NECESSITATING AN INFLT SHUTDOWN OF #2 ENG. ACFT WAS DSNDED TO FL240, AND RETURNED TO NRT (RJAA) UNDER RADAR CTL. VMC CONDITIONS PREVAILED THROUGHOUT AN UNEVENTFUL 3 ENG APCH AND LNDG TO RWY 34 NRT. NO EMER WAS DECLARED, AND NO TFC PRIORITY HANDLING WAS REQUESTED. FLT HANDBOOK PROCS WERE UTILIZED TO SECURE THE #2 ENG. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRIEFED NOT TO PREPARE CABIN FOR EMER EVAC. CFR EQUIP WAS REQUESTED FOR LNDG AT NRT (RJAA) AND ACCOMPANIED THE ACFT TO THE GATE. FUEL JETTISONING WAS NOT UTILIZED. UPON ARR AT THE GATE AT NRT, MAINT DISCOVERED NUMEROUS METAL PARTICLES THE SIZE OF BB'S IN THE BOTTOM OF THE EXHAUST PIPE OF #2 ENG. AT THE TIME OF ENG SHUTDOWN, FO WAS FLYING ACFT, BUT CAPT ASSUMED PF DUTIES FOR APCH AND LNDG.
