Narrative:
Previous clearance was to descend 'pilot discretion' to 7000 ft. Current controller issued 'cleared to joplin airport.' I assumed we were cleared for visual approach. At 5000 ft, controller asked what altitude we were at, that we should have been at 7000 ft. In the future, I will verify altitude information with controller to insure exact instructions when cleared to airport.

Narrative: PREVIOUS CLRNC WAS TO DSND 'PLT DISCRETION' TO 7000 FT. CURRENT CTLR ISSUED 'CLRED TO JOPLIN ARPT.' I ASSUMED WE WERE CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH. AT 5000 FT, CTLR ASKED WHAT ALT WE WERE AT, THAT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT 7000 FT. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL VERIFY ALT INFO WITH CTLR TO INSURE EXACT INSTRUCTIONS WHEN CLRED TO ARPT.
