Narrative:

At FL390, M.85, due to be over target flight time. Mostly smooth with occasional light chop. Encountered light mountain wave effect. Speed increased towards redline, but manually retarded autothrottle, just keeping it below redline. Mins later, speed jumped again. This time unable to keep speed from exceeding redline. Reached .872 mach/273 KIAS. Overspd lasted less than 2 seconds. It was smooth the entire time. No other indications. Overspd written up in logbook. Captain was not in cockpit. Was in lavatory at the time.
