Narrative:

Shortly after power up, at about 50 KTS, I aborted the takeoff for a 'confign steering' message. This was not caused by the aircraft trucks not having a chance to straighten out, as I had made sure that they were, and we were doing a rolling takeoff. Tower was notified and we cleared the runway without incident. I made a PA announcement, we called dispatch and maintenance, and returned to the gate. The maintenance personnel in lhr had changed a tire before our takeoff, but they indicated to me that they had returned the truck steering lever to its normal position. According to lhr maintenance, we had a problem with the truck steering actuator. After conferring with maintenance, the truck steering mechanism was pinned out and we departed with a 'maintenance gear steering' status message. There was no need to consult the limits section on tire overheat as all brake and tire temperatures were low. The remainder of the flight was completed without incident.
